Book Buying Habits Tag!

Hey Book Nerds, and welcome back for another tag! This week, I decided to finally do the “Book Buying Habits” tag. I’ve been wanting to do this one for quite a while now, and I feel like it’s about time! And even, everyone has different habits. Some choose to buy online, some choose second-hand books and others end up pre-ordering. So, today I’m going to be telling you all about my book buying habits!

Where do you buy your books?
I always buy my books from Chapters/Indigo! For those that don’t know, I like to call it the Canadian version of Barnes & Noble. They sell books (of course), mugs, pillows, home decor, notebooks and hundreds of other items! The only unfortunate part is that all of their books come at list price (in-store). It is super rare to find a sale on a book that you really want. I’ve been wanting to try to find another bookstore to shop at, but sadly there are none in my city. So, I’m going to be sticking with good ole’ Chapters in the long run.

Do you ever pre-order books and if so, do you do this in-store or online?
No. I’ve actually never pre-ordered a book before. All of my books are bought in-store, which really makes me unable to pre-order anything. Of course, I could go to one of the many kiosks in Chapters and pre-order something. But, when I go into a bookstore and buy something, I really love the feeling of walking out with it, too! I also don’t have much use of pre-ordering. My TBR is so huge that I would never actually get to the book when it releases.

On average, how many books do you buy a month?
Honestly, I don’t buy many books each month. I try to save as much money as possible, so buying more than three books at list price, per month, is out of the box. But in order for me to be able to buy a few books every month, I like to try to aim at buying paperbacks. They’re way cheaper than hardcovers and I love how flexible they are. So, on average, I usually buy between 1 – 3 books every month. That is, unless I find some used books!

Do you use your local library?
Nope. I have a library card and everything but I never end up going to any libraries. There are actually two super close to me: one of the city public libraries and the one within my school. Although I am really close to the library within my school all year, I never find myself stepping in there. I’ll admit, the librarian is really strict. I have nothing against libraries, I just never end up using them.

What is your opinion on library books?
I think they are fantastic! I love how there are thousands of libraries, all around the world, that provide people with free reading material! Some people don’t have enough money to buy books, but they still like reading. And others prefer not to spend their money on books. So, being able to buy/get a library card and take out a bunch of books every month is amazing!

How do you feel about second-hand books?
Ahhh, I absolutely love them! Some come in really good condition for over half off! Although the only bookstore I have near me is Chapters, we also have a used book sale every three – four months! All of the books are always in great condition and all the money goes to the local children’s hospital! It’s all for such a great cause, so of course I buy a huge stack of books! I don’t have any problems when it comes to second-hand books, aside from the fact that sometimes they come super bent.

Do you keep your TBR pile on your main bookshelf, or no?
Yes and no. It really depends on what type of book it is. Any book that is a classic or is a mass market paperback is on my dresser. But, every other type of book on my TBR is on my main bookshelf. I keep the majority of them on the very bottom shelf. But, some of them are on the other shelves. If it’s a book by an author that I have on my read shelf, I usually put it with the rest of their books. But, for the most part, all of my TBR books are on my shelf!

Do you plan to read all of the books you own?
Of course! I have no intention to ever buy a book that I would never read. Although I do lose interest in some after awhile, I will usually still give them a go. I feel like there is no reason to buy a book if you aren’t going to at least give it a try. My TBR currently includes everything from classics, to non-fiction, to YA novels. Although I mostly read YA, I do also like to pick up something a little more challenging!

What do you do with books you feel you will never read/did not enjoy?
Nothing. I do absolutely nothing with books that I disliked, or haven’t read. If I dislike a book, I usually just put it on my shelf in an area that doesn’t contain any of my favorites. If I don’t think I will ever read it, I usually just keep it on my TBR shelf. You never know when you might want to actually read it.

Have you ever donated books?
Nope, but I really want to! I have so many Childrens’ books that I know I won’t get to in the near future. So, I feel like donating them would be an amazing way to share the love of reading with others! I definitely plan on donating them to my local library, thrift stores or possibly selling them!

Have you ever been on a book buying ban?
Yes! As I type this, I am actually on one. And let me tell you, it sucks! I promised myself not to buy any books until September. I want to try to stretch until the end of September, when there is another used book sale. But, I feel like I will give in on September 5th when Jennifer L. Armentrout’s new book releases! Let’s see how long I can actually lst on this ban!

Do you feel that you buy too many books?
Oh, definitely! What reader doesn’t feel that way!

And, that’s it for the questions! This tag was super fun and I hope that some of you will also do it. So with that said, I tag anyone who has seen this post! I hope you all enjoyed today’s tag. Don’t forget to comment, like and follow for more posts!

Happy Reading,

Alaina ❤

  2. I’m so jealous of you! I have absolutely no self control when it comes to my book buying. The weekend is not complete without my frantic trips to my local bookstore. *eek*

    1. Haha! I have limited transportation so I don’t get to go to the bookstore often. I also only make money through my allowance, so it isn’t much. But trust me, when I go to the bookstore, I spend hours there.
