REVIEW: City Of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

Hey Book Nerds! Alaina here, and I am so overly excited for today’s post. I recently finished the beautiful finale to The Mortal instruments and holy, it did not disappoint! I was so into this book, and just couldn’t take my eyes off of it. And yes, I know I haven’t posted my City of Lost Souls review yet, but I couldn’t wait to get this one up! So now without further ado, let’s get straight into this review!

THOUGHTS AND RATING:

I don’t know how but, Cassandra Clare does not fail to disappoint in ANY of her books. Each one is fantastic in it’s own unique way. Yes, even the ones within six book series. Kind of insane, right.

But anyways, this book blew my mind away. Most of the books before this one, I wasn’t really “into”. I don’t know why but, I sort of have a love hate relationship with every other book in the series. But this one…. there aren’t enough words in the English language to describe my feelings for it. It was heartbreaking, gleaming with joy and filled with swoony male characters. Yes, even Sebastian is swoony, even if he was evil.

One of my favorite things about this novel was all of the characters! Of course, we still ventured with the main crew: Clary, Jace, Izzy, Simon, Magnus and Alec. But, we also had so many NEW characters. Or at least new to the TMI series. Out of all of the new characters, my favorites would definitely have to be EMMA AND JULIAN. They were super cute and badass for twelve years old and I just couldn’t believe how brave they were. Emma would do anything to save the people she loves, alike the strength we saw Clary build up throughout the series. I also really loved Julian’s family, the Blackthorns. Although some of them were turned before we could even get to know them, I still loved reading about the others: Tavvy, Ty, Livia and Dru. They were all such a cute family. Now last but definitely not least, Tessa Gray and Jem Carstairs? That is who Brother Zachariah was all along right? I hope because although I don’t know if I’ll be a #JEMMA or #WESSA shipper while reading The Infernal Devices (I know it is a shame I haven’t already) I definitely cannot wait to explore more with both characters!

Now, I think I was probably the only person in the whole universe who read this book and absolutely loved Sebastian. Or maybe it was more of a feeling of pity towards him. Because, if you think about his character without all of the gross demon blood inside him, he would’ve been good; he would’ve been as good of a shadowhunter as Jace. He could’ve been such a strong and powerful character if Valentine didn’t do what he actually did. And basically that led us to the Endarkened.

The Endarkened shadowhunters were such an interesting villain band in my opinion. Instead of it being Valentine vs. All in City of Glass it was “Sebastian and his Endarkened” vs All. But, seeing all of the shadowhunters’ loved ones turn into Sebastian’s evil army also tore me to pieces. Amatis for instance, was such an amazing character in City of Glass but then she got turned and became this evil that had to die. HAD TO. Sort of the same thing happened with Mark Blackthorn, though he was forced to join “The Wild Hunt”. I really wished that we got to see more of Mark Blackthorn, but I guess it is what it is.

Overall, this book was amazing. I was so into it that I couldn’t take my eyes off it all four days it took for me to read it. I loved all of the new and old parts of the shadow world that Cassie incorporated to make this beautiful novel. And with that said, I can’t help but give it five stars!
