Review: Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

Hello everybody and welcome back to my blog! For today’s post, I’ve decided to finally write up my review for Sarah J. Maas’ Crown of Midnight! This book was phenomenal in all the ways that a book can be phenomenal! There was romance, grueling battles and some very hot men. We also got introduced to quite a few new characters and had to say goodbye to others. But it was probably for the best. So, without further ado, lets dive right into this review!

My Thoughts:

If you haven’t thought about starting the Throne of Glass series, you definitely should get on with it! The first book was filled with lots of fights, battles and an overall high level of badass. But, there are many mixed thoughts with the first book in a series. So as this is coming from the perspective of someone who actually didn’t care for Throne of Glass, I would like to encourage all of the first book haters to charge through that book and finish it. Just finish it and then move on to the beauty that is Crown of Midnight!

This book was stellar. There was never a dull moment within all 418 pages of this book. And definitely a hit on the non-romance side. I’ve seen a lot of books recently that were lacking romance but, Sarah wrote it like a pro. It was almost as if I was Celaena. I could feel her agony, I could feel her Joy but, most of all, I could feel her sorrow which doesn’t happen too often in YA novels.

Sarah writes her books like she’s done it for the past decade. She is one of those writers who has so much potential and is using it to the best of her abilities. But, most of all, I love how intense and powerful her writing is. She creates detailed universes and such complex characters that her series could continue on forever. But, everything must come to an end. And as we all know, Empire of Storms is coming out soon which is said to be the second last installment in the series. So, with that being said, I better get through my TBR quicker so I can read it when it releases!

Now back to the topic of this post, Crown of Midnight. I actually didn’t have high hopes for this book. Throne of Glass was a long and grueling ride for me and I thought that Crown of Midnight would be exactly alike that. But holy—wow was I wrong! Instead of that long battle hat I had to fight through to finish Throne of Glass, I had such an amazing time reading this book. I laughed, I smiled, I cried and I even sobbed at one point!

Celaena Sardothien was such a well-put together character. I’m kind of starting to think that she has a 10,000 word outline just for Celaena. In Throne of Glass, we saw Celaena as the weakly pale figure who came out of Endovier, build back into the assassin she used to be. And by Crown of Midnight, she officially became one of the biggest badass females in YA literature. She has so much within her that I’m excited to see span out!

Now, how could I miss Dorian and Chaol? These two are the handsome males that make this series so very hard to resist. Although they are friends in the series, I see them more as brothers. They’ve literally been through so much together and it’s not like they can’t add liking the same girl on to their long list of things they’ve done together! Dorian and Chaol, although very different, are the best of friends.

Every thing about this book was amazing! We finally got to see the King’s champion in action, saw Celaena in all of her ragged terror and got introduced to more of her past. And that’s what I really liked about it. Although never a cheerful book, Sarah greatly expressed Celaena, Chaol and Dorian’s feelings through the words on the pages.

We also go introduced to something new in this novel: MAGIC! I love reading about magic and I loved how Sarah finally brought that element into the novels. I’m pretty sure it will be a great advantage to a certain someone in future novels.

Now, before I wrap this review up, I would just like to say #RIPNEHEMIA. She was such a great character in the first book and a half. But now, I can’t believe that she’s gone. Now I am left with one other favorite character: Fleetfoot.
