*Spoilers may be included towards the end*
So, recently I finished the first book in The Mortal Instruments series. City of Bones, by the queen of fantasy, Cassandra Clare, has astounded me by how marvelous this novel was. This book gave this series a strong start and led me to believe that I will have hope in an amazing series. And so far, my hope hasn’t let me down.
For those who have never read any of Cassandra’s novel, I highly suggest you try one. I was quite weary before reading this novel since I was way off the bandwagon of reading it. But, After finishing book one, I realized that no matter how far beyond the date the book was published, you can still read it. As I’m typing this, I am about halfway through book three, City of Glass and I haven’t put the book down in hours. But, as you can probably see, here I am, typing up a review for my viewers instead of lying on my bed reading.
Premise of the novel:
The whole entire Mortal instruments series revolves around the world of Shadowhunters, a species also known as the Nephilim. They are unlike normal mundanes; having a blood mixture of mundane and angel.
Clary Fray has lived in New York all of her life and has only recognized the world as a mundane world. That is, until one night at the local Pandemonium club. She distinguished the killing of a demon. But, weird as ever, she was the only one who saw it. Clary watched Jace, Isabelle and Alec kill something she thought was mundane right in front of her eyes.
By the next day, she’d already been attacked by a demon and taken to the Institute. During the duration of her stay at the Institute, Clary got to get to know the demon killing Shadowhunters better and learn how to live a life as one of them. That was, until everything turned into a disaster.
*Warning, spoilers ahead*
My thought on the novel:
Oh-my-god. In the name of the angel, I am beyond words of how much I enjoyed this book. From beginning to end, I was fully indulged. But, first, let me just say, what the heck was that ending about. Did Cassandra really have to torture me with the loss of a relationship between Clary and Jace. Did I actually read about Valentine and Jocelyn being love birds and having two children. Valentine is an evil, demon-sided Shadowhunter who doesn’t know how to support the existence of is own kind. The ending broke my heart but, I was super excited to meet the characters we didn’t get to in City of Bones. Characters like Max, Maryse and Robert Lightwood. I am ecstatic to continue this series and hopefully finish it befor ethe Shadowhunters TV show airs in January.
Im also a bit weary about reading this series because there are just so many! I know lots, and i mean LOTS, of people who love this series, but I’m still not sure. Do you think I should give it a go? x
